Canopy House

CANOPY HOUSE

The bespoke residence is a dramatic fusion of architecture and nature, in Rhinebeck. Nestled on a rock cliff's edge, the architectural form is inspired by arboreal structures planted firmly in the rock ledge — comprised of a series of cantilevered volumes, rising up from the rock base and ascending into the tree canopy.

STRATIFICATION

The multifaceted vertical structure is formed of three distinct layers, taking cues from the residence’s leafed siblings. The lower level is cast in board-formed concrete integrating both physically and aesthetically with the dramatic rock ledge on which it’s sited. The ground level extends up and branches outward, clad in a rich brown vertical wood siding and features a cantilevered living volume with dramatic glazing wall enjoying Catskills mountains views. The upper level caps the rising form with subtle angles and overhangs, bringing dynamism and lightness as it greets the adjacent tree canopy.

INTERIORS

Designed to showcase, not complete with the stunning natural surroundings, the interiors are sophisticated yet demure. An almost monochromatic palette of white oak flooring and matching millwork clads much of the functional interiors and porticos complemented with limewash walls and integrated trough lighting. The kitchen, as with most of the interiors, is designed to recede in form, instead to place focus on living and entertaining.

The primary suite on the upper level offers a treetop respite with floating custom bed, integrated millwork storage, custom vanity, walk-around shower and copious skylights and glazing for intimate connections with nature. Custom designed artwork installations incorporate fiber, leather and other natural materials via local artisan collaborations to further integrate the naturalistic sensory experience.
